Boston Red Sox vs Los Angeles Angels Prediction

"Home sweet home." That is likely what the Boston Red Sox are saying after a road trip where they won just three of ten games against the Rays, Blue Jays, and Orioles. The Red Sox now start a three-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels just one game ahead of Baltimore for last place in the AL East.

A common theme of Boston's road trip was that they were held to two or fewer runs in five of the seven losses. Will the Red Sox offense wake up tonight? Will the Angels' offense, the league's best, get back to its ways of scoring runs?

The box score shows that Boston's offense showed signs of life in Sunday's series finale against the Orioles, but do not let the final stat line fool you. Four of their runs came in the top of the ninth inning off a J.D. Martinez grand slam after the game was already well in hand. Unfortunately, the Red Sox could not capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving eight runners on the basepath in the first four innings, including stranding three at second base.

It is fair to wonder if Boston's lineup is full of guys pressing at the plate. The Red Sox won just nine of 22 games in April after hitting a disappointing .225 collectively. It has gotten to the point where manager Alex Cora benched two of his regular starters, Alex Verdugo and Bobby Dalbec after Verdugo hit just .138 last week and Dalbec batted .122 over a 15-game stretch.

Will coming home and staring at the Green Monster in left field cure all of Boston's offensive woes? Considering Boston has scored just 24 runs in seven home games, a simple change of scenery is not the simple solution.

And Los Angeles' offense is not in the best form either. The Angels entered Monday as the highest-scoring team in the American League with 110 runs and were one of four American League teams that had scored at least 100 runs on the season. However, Los Angeles was shut out for the second time in three games against the White Sox and now has their own questions. Shohei Ohtani was used as a pinch hitter after leaving Sunday's game in the ninth inning with groin tightness. However, Joe Maddon may once again be careful with his star slugger, especially with the temperatures in Boston being chilly on an early May night.

Tonight's pitching matchup is between Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 2.12) and Michael Wacha (2-0, 1.77). The under is 3-0-1 in Wacha's last four starts and is 4-0-1 in Los Angeles' last five games against teams with a winning percentage below .400 (it still feels weird that Boston has that low of a winning percentage). In addition, the under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings between these teams. With both offenses having many question marks entering this series opener, we like the under to cash again.
