So we’re picking on Jose Berrios here. He has been very hit or miss this year, he got absolutely rocked in his opening start and couldn’t even go an inning but he has also put together some outings where he only allowed 1 run and goes deep. Saying that you would think it’s a bet you would want to avoid because you never know which version you’ll get, I would get that. This bet is less about Berrios though and more about my belief in Cleveland in this spot. You may wonder why I have so much faith in an 11-13 team, I’ll explain why.
Although Cleveland's record is poor they have been batting exceptionally well. The Guardians rank 3rd in the MLB in terms of batting average and are especially deadly against right-handed pitching. Against lefties, the Guardians are only batting .200 but against righties, they are an impressive .276 in 554 at-bats. Cleveland has scored 29 runs in their last 5 games which is good for 5.8 runs a game. Berrios will have his hands full today with a team that crushes righties and seems to perform better at home.
Berrios has allowed 18 hits in 69 at-bats against these Cleveland bats which is good for a .260 average. I just don’t see Cleveland not scoring a measly 2 here in the first 5 innings, that’s not asking for anything special. I think we’re getting this line because the books are low on Aaron Civale starting so people aren’t looking Cleveland's way. We don’t care in the slightest how he pitches as long as our guys do their job. Berrios on the road is typically worse, Cleveland has been swinging the 3rd best bats in MLB and they specifically love hitting righties. Sign me up for 2 runs.
