Detroit Tigers vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction

The Tigers are a team that came into this season with a lot of hype after having an above-average season and exceeding expectations in 2021. They also added Javier Baez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tucker Barnhart, and talented prospect Spencer Torkelson but those additions have not led to more wins to this point.

The Tigers come into this series with a record of 8-19 but have been playing much better than their record may indicate. They are coming off a series against the Astros where they got swept in 4 straight games and only allowed a total of 14 runs which isn't too bad considering the type of firepower that the Astros have.

The issue for the Tigers has been their inability to put runs on the board. They only scored 6 runs in 4 games against Houston and are dead last in the league in runs per game as they are scoring just 2.89 runs/9 innings. The Tigers are tied for the least runs scored of any team this season but the good thing for them is that the Oakland A's aren't doing too well in that department either.

Oakland is currently 2nd to last in the league in team average (.200), last in on-base percentage (.264), and 2nd to last in slugging percentage (.305). Oakland has done fairly well this season as they have gotten carried by some solid starting pitching but they have regressed over the last week and a half.

The A's come into this game on a 9-game losing streak and they have only 16 runs in their last 8 games and 7 of those came in one game against the Rays in a 10-7 loss on May 3rd.

Tonight the A's are starting Paul Balckburn who comes into this game with solid numbers as he is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP so will he continue that success tonight? I do not believe so.

Balckburn is a solid starting pitcher, but he is not an ace, and I think he is due for some negative regression. I also believe that the Tigers are due for some positive regression in the biggest way at the plate. The Tigers play in a very pitcher-friendly ballpark in Comerica with very deep dimensions so their power numbers may not jump off the charts, but I definitely expect the Tigers to start hitting much better offensively now that they are back at home in their comfort zone.

The Tigers have hit .234 at home this season compared to a .204 average on the road and their slugging and on-base percentages as a team are also much better at home compared to their road splits. The Tigers have been on a grueling road trip as they played 10 of their last 13 games against the Twins, Dodgers, and Astros-- three teams who should all be very good this season and be in the running for their respective division titles.

The Tigers will start Michael Pineda on the mound tonight and he has been very solid for them this year, especially at home. Pineda shut out the Yankees in his first start of the season and has been looking like his old self in 2022 to this point.

Overall, I think the Tigers are due for positive regression as a whole after a grueling road trip against some very tough opponents so with that being said, I am rolling with Tigers F5 ML at -110 and Full Game ML at -114 for 1U each as my most confident MLB Picks of the night.
