This is either our third or fourth betting on this and for good reason, this Dodgers team is elite. Julio Urias is on the mound today and he has been a top pitcher in the league this year. The lefty has a 1.88 ERA and his only bad start was his opening game of the season. Since then Urias has pitched 22 innings and has only allowed 2 earned runs. We believe that will remain the case today because Pittsburgh only hits lefties at a .225 clip and has a bad history vs Urias. Julio has only allowed 3 hits in 19 plate appearances and no walks. An OPB against him of .157 is great for us no matter how small the sample size is.
Pittsburgh is throwing out Jose Quintana today. Quintana has been decent on the young season but feels like he’s outperforming where he’ll end up on the year. Quintana is typically a pitcher whose ERA sits in the four-plus range. Today feels like it will be his worst start of the year, it’s by far his toughest competition. He has allowed 2+ ER in 3/5 and today should be 4/6 with the Dodgers First 5 Team Total being projected at 2.5. The Dodgers offense has gotten hot and has scored 29 runs in four games and not a game less than 6. The Dodgers haven’t particularly hit lefties great this year but have a great history versus Quintana as they have 26 hits in 85 at-bats with 16 walks. A batting average of .305 and OBP of .405 sounds pretty good to me.
The Dodgers first 5 is a bet that anybody can make and feel good about. Betting shouldn’t always be about outsmarting one another and seeing how “sharp” you are but just taking value where you find it. -140 is a fair amount of juice to some but I don’t find it all that bad. We get the better pitcher and better lineup, that’s worth paying some juice for. When Urias or Kershaw is on the mound this is always worth a look, don’t be crazy and think too hard about it.
