There are so many reasons why I love this bet I don’t know where to begin. Lets start off with MacKenzie Gore, the pitcher we are backing here. He is a 23-year-old but looks as polished as any pitcher in the league, the lefty has a 1.71 ERA and hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a game. Today, he finds the Cubs who struggle against southpaws only batting .228 against them. Gore seems to be the real deal and the Cubs aren’t exactly striking the fear in me that the Braves or Guardians would and he has already performed well vs those two ballclubs.
I rarely mention travel but it’s worth noting that the Cubs were in Chicago last night for Sunday Night Baseball and have traveled all the way to California without a day of rest. I’m expecting that to play a small factor into the Cubs struggling to hit tonight. I’m also a Kyle Hendricks hater, the guy is more name than game. Hendricks has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two starts and doesn’t seem to have his best stuff. Although San Diego remains without Tatis Jr. they’ve proven to be a good team at putting up runs as they rank in the top 10th in the MLB. Hendricks has allowed 14 hits in 47 at-bats against these San Diego batters which is good for a .297 batting average.
San Diego is just a flat-out better team and has the better pitcher today. Throw in that San Diego doesn’t have to travel and the Cubs have a large trip on short notice and we found ourselves with a bet with an edge. Hendricks has also allowed a HR 5 times in the last two games which bodes well for us in 2 out situations where the inning isn’t dead. The Cubs have lost 5 straight games, some would argue that they’re due. I would argue that they’re bad. Let's do this!
