Los Angeles Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays Prediction: How Will the Rays Respond After the No-Hitter?
Not all wins are created equal, as the Los Angeles Angels have made a statement thus far in their first two dominant wins over the Tampa Bay Rays the last two days. First, the Angels used the long ball to bludgeon the Rays 11-3 in Monday’s series opener. Then, rookie Reid Detmers threw the second no-hitter of the season in yesterday’s 12-0 victory.
Despite these two losses, Tampa Bay is 20-8 in the last 28 meetings and is 32-13 in its previous 45 road games against Los Angeles. Can they cool the Angels’ hot bats and salvage the final game of this series? Will Los Angeles continue to exert its dominance and stifle Tampa Bay’s offense? Here are our picks predictions and odds for tonight’s series finale between the Rays and Angels.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
Tampa Bay enters tonight having lost three straight, which followed a six-game winning streak. On Monday, Tampa Bay’s 11-3 loss, they finished 1-for-16 with RISP. Meanwhile, the Angels hit four home runs, including Shohei Ohtani’s first career grand slam in either the U.S. or Japan.
Ohtani has often been compared to Babe Ruth, and he drew parallels to the Great Bambino once again in his last start. When he faced the Red Sox at Fenway Park last week, Ohtani became the first starting pitcher to bat in one of the top four spots in the lineup in a game at Fenway Park since Ruth hit cleanup as the pitcher in 1919.
Shohei Ohtani’s numbers may not jump off the page through his first five starts, but he has been sensational in four of his first five appearances and is still being penalized for one bad outing. Ohtani is 3-2 with a 3.08 ERA, but six of his nine earned runs allowed came in his April 14th road start against Texas.Â
While the Rangers are a divisional opponent who has seen Ohtani five times now, the Rays are not as familiar with his unique arsenal. Ohtani is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two career starts against Tampa Bay, and he has struck out 16 Rays hitters in 12.2 combined innings. Only two current Rays hitters (Harold Ramirez and Mike Zunino) have faced Ohtani, and they are a combined 0-for-4.Â
Tampa Bay counters with second-year man Shane McClanahan (2-2, 3.06). McClanahan makes his league-high seventh start and leads the league with 47 strikeouts and a 13.1 K/9 rate. His 3.11 FIP and 0.990 WHIP are on pace to be better than last year’s rookie campaign. While McClanahan’s strikeout rate is also way up from last year, so too is his ground ball rate, as he is getting ground ball outs at a 59.2% clip compared to 45.7% last year. Opposing hitters are also slugging just .347 against the lefty, and his BABIP is down from .330 last year to .273 this year. Current Angels hitters are a combined 2-for-21 against McClanahan.
The under is 9-0 in McClanahan’s last nine road starts against teams with a winning record and is 8-6-1 in Los Angeles’ 15 games as home favorites. As a result, we expect another low-scoring battle with arguably each team’s best pitcher toeing the rubber tonight.
