The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates play each other for the fifth time in the last week. When these teams played in Cincy last week, we finally saw this Reds’ offense start to heat up. Prior to playing the Pirates, the Reds had lost 20 of their last 21. Since then, the Reds have won five of their last seven games and have scored 53 runs. Pittsburgh Pirates vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction
Tyler Mahle is starting for the Reds. This was one of Mahle’s better starts this season, only allowing the Pirates one hit, but unfortunately, that hit was a two-run homer by Bryan Reynolds that also scored a walked batter. Still, Mahle has struggled to limit his opponent’s runs so far this season, as evidenced by the over by being 5-1 in his starts. Pittsburgh is going with another struggling pitcher in Mitch Keller. So far this season, Keller has given up at least four earned runs in four of his six starts. Last season, he made five appearances versus the Reds, and all ended with at least eight runs.
Yesterday’s game ended a 10-game over streak for the Reds. The high-scoring games should pick back up tonight as long as the Pirates are able to put runs on the board. There were a myriad of scoring opportunities for yesterday, but both teams struggled to actually bring in the runs. The Pirates have yet to get a shut-out two games in a row, so Mahle could be up against some vengeful batters. Mitch Keller is not capable of containing this Cincinnati Reds team looking to compensate for their bumpy start to the season. Take the over 8 at even money.
