It took over a month but it finally happened. The New York Mets lost a series to the Seattle Mariners, of all teams. That's right the Seattle Mariners are under .500 but they hung on yesterday and it was a very well played series all weekend.
So, now that the series streak is out of the way, the Mets must play the Cardinals who just won a series against the Giants in absolute blowout fashion. Last night was an embarrassment, as the Cardinals absolutely blitzed the Giants early and never looked back. Today these two teams play each other in New York and we feel we have found an edge and will take advantage of it. The Mets are in first place in the NL East and have the best record in the National League but they do have some issues still. They are still missing their ace in Jacob DeGrom, they just lost one of their best pitchers in Tyler Megill and tonight they are forced to use Trevor Williams, a reliever forced to make a spot start in his place.
Trevor has been awful this year with a 5.73 era and has given up seven earned runs in eleven innings. To say he is like 7-11 would be about right as he has been like a store open all day and night giving up runs every time he comes out there. So he will go as long as he can and then the Mets will have to waste their pen in Game 1 of a crucial series with the Cardinals. Trevor Williams used to be a starter when he was with the Pirates and in his career, Williams is 4-6 with a 5.64 ERA in 19 career games (14 starts) against the Cardinals. Those numbers do not impress us nor should they impress you. The Mets are due for a little regression after their hot start as everyone loves this team currently but we are not in love with this team and feel they shouldn't be favored today.
The Cardinals scored fifteen runs yesterday and we feel they could have scored as many as they wanted as they were in the zone last night. The game was 11-0 just like that as they hit three homers and they left twenty men on base. That's how good their offense was yesterday. Their pitching was just as good as they let Albert Pujols pitch for fun because they knew the game was over.
Tonight they send the guy who might be the best pitcher so far this year if not he is sure in the running in Mike Mikolas. So far this year, he is 3-1 with a minuscule 1.49 era and has had two shutouts, two starts with two runs, and three starts with one run. That is a consistent pitcher. In his career, he has also been great against the Mets, as Mikolas is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three games (two starts) against the Mets. With a much better pitcher who has won his last five road games, and a high flying offense coming off their best game of the year the Cardinals will look to avenge the series loss from April including when Mikolas lost to Scherzer (even though he outpitched him ) but if you go back and look the Cardinals gave up five in the ninth to lose 5-2 (the pen won't do that today). This game is the Cardinals to lose and we feel they won't lose it tonight.
