Astros vs. Rangers Line Movement

Houston Astros vs Texas Rangers Prediction

Tonight, the Rangers will start Jon Gray who has had a below-average start to his 2022 campaign. He comes into this game with a 1-1 record and a 5.73 ERA. Gray has also really struggled on the road this season as he has allowed at least 3 earned runs in all of his road starts except his most recent start against the Yankees where he tossed 4 1/3rd innings of scoreless ball, which was his best start of the season.

Tonight, he will likely face his toughest test of the year as I truly believe the Astros have the most dangerous lineup from top to bottom. The Astros are also a very patient lineup who has no issue with taking their walks and passing the baton to the next guy in line. This may cause trouble for Gray as he has really struggled with his command early on in the year. To this point, Gray has issued 13 total walks in only 22 innings this year. Combine that with the 21 hits he has allowed and that equals a lot of trouble on the basepaths for a pitcher to navigate around.

Gray has been doing a pretty good job of getting out of jams and pitching around early walks and hits, but I think that streak of luck is going to come to an end against a very patient and experienced Astros lineup.

The Astros have also done a very good job of bouncing back after losses and not letting their struggles snowball on them. They have not lost back-to-back games in nearly 3 weeks and have their ace on the mound tonight in Justin Verlander to make sure that it doesn't happen tonight.

Verlander has looked very much like the number 1 pitcher everyone has been accustomed to seeing as he comes into this game with a 5-1 record and an excellent 1.38 ERA. He has not allowed a run over his last 2 starts as he has thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings against the Twins and Nationals who are both better offensive teams than the Rangers.

Another reason why I like Verlander to have a strong start tonight is that the Rangers actually covered the F5 spread when they faced him the first time in Arlington. The game was a 0-0 tie that the Astros would eventually win 3-2 but the Astros were unable to give him any run support through the first 5 innings as the Rangers covered the F5 +0.5 spread.

I think the Astros offense wakes up tonight and provides some early run support for Verlander, who I think will have another strong performance at home against a below-average Ranger's offense. With that being said, I am rolling with the Astros F5 -0.5 at -143 for 1U as my most confident MLB Play of the night as I think the Astros start fast and take a lead into the 6th inning tonight.
