The Mariners and Red Sox conclude a four-game series at Fenway Park this afternoon, and MLB expert Mike Spector weighs in with his best play on the total.
ANALYSIS

Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction: Are We In for a Fourth Consecutive Slugfest at Fenway?

Today’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners may mean a couple of firsts for the Boston Red Sox. After winning the first three games by a combined score of 25-14, the Red Sox are not only in position for their first series sweep of the season, but a win would also mean they would extend their season-high winning streak to five games.

Boston has beaten everyone Seattle has thrown at them, even defending Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray. However, the Mariners have to be confident in who they are sending to the mound today, as Logan Gilbert (4-2, 2.40) looks to end the team’s three-game skid.

Will Gilbert be able to cool down a sizzling Red Sox offense, or will Boston’s bats add to its more than eight runs per game average in this series?

Read on for our best play and odds for Sunday’s series finale between the Mariners and Red Sox.

Red Sox vs. Mariners Total Movement

Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction

Despite having a Cy Young winner on its staff, Logan Gilbert has been Seattle’s best pitcher. Gilbert finished as April’s American League Pitcher of the Month after ending the month with a 3-0 record and 0.40 ERA in four starts. Gilbert has recorded nine strikeouts in consecutive starts, and that matches the career-high he set in his only other start at Fenway Park in his career last September.

Compared to Gilbert’s hot start in April, he has struggled mightily in four May starts, going 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA. He has allowed four runs in two of his last three starts, with control being one of his biggest issues. After allowing just four walks in 22.1 innings in April, he has already issued 12 free passes in 22.2 May innings.

Opposing Gilbert is Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 4.32), who made history of the wrong kid in his last start. Per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Eovaldi became the third pitcher in MLB history to allow five home runs in one inning, as he was tagged for nine runs in 1.2 innings against the Astros. Unfortunately, Eovaldi’s struggles should continue today against a Mariners team that scored six earned runs in ten innings while facing Eovaldi twice last year.

Given the near record-high temperatures in Boston this weekend, that should aid in producing another slugfest. The 90+ degree heat should wear down both starting pitchers throughout the game, especially Gilbert, who is not used to these blazing hot conditions in Seattle. In addition, one cannot argue with history, as a whopping 16 of the last 17 games between the Mariners and Red Sox have gone over the projected total.

Thus, we are getting good value with this total juiced to the other, and fully expect these two teams to combine for double-digit runs for the fourth straight time in this series.
