ANALYSIS

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Best Bet: Should We Bank on the Bronx Bombers Sunday Night?

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox are in the midst of game one of a doubleheader as I type this, with game two starting tonight at 7:08 P.M. EST. This edition of Sunday Night Baseball will close out a three-game series between the two teams who have had some heated encounters early in the season. Even if the Yankees lose in the afternoon, they can close out the series win with a win tonight. Can the Yankees get a series win at home tonight? Or will the White Sox stymie their plans?

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction

The Yankees are off to the hottest start we've seen from them in recent years, and their 29 wins are the most in baseball. The "Bronx Bombers" have been living up to their name and are tied for the second-most home runs in the MLB currently with 56, one behind the Angels. Three players (Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and Giancarlo Stanton) have double-digit home runs on the season already. The Yankees have also had elite pitching and are third in the MLB with a 2.91 earned run team average.

Taking the mound for the Yankees will be Luis Severino, who has been excellent this year. He also must be loved by the Yankees hitters because he gets excellent run support almost every time. The Yankees have won every game started by Severino this year, going 7-0 when Severino is the starter. Severino throws a nasty changeup that produces lots of ground balls, which he pairs with his scorching four-seamer with a 96.3 MPH average. Severino has also seen most of the White Sox lineup a few times before, and the only hitter that has had much success against Severino is Jose Abreu. I expect another good outing from Sevy at home tonight.

Michael Kopech has pitched exceptionally well to start the year, but I expect some regression may be due for him. His 1.54 ERA is one of the lowest in baseball, and he throws his fastball 66% of the time. Kopech also just started against the Yankees on May 15th, and any time a pitcher has a quick turnaround like that, it favors the hitters significantly. The Yankees put up three runs in six innings against Kopech in that outing, but I expect more than three runs in this start. That start was at home, this one will be in Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees lineup just saw his stuff last week, so the memory of his pitches are fresh to them. Also, any guy who throws 66% fastballs will succeed less against power-hitting lineups. The Yankees eat fastballs alive, and the wind is blowing out today at Yankee Stadium. I think the Yankees will win this one tonight and cover the run line as well by hitting multiple home runs in another good outing from Severino.
