Giants vs. Padres Line Movement
San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Prediction
The Giants have gotten off to a solid start on the season just like last year, but they have struggled offensively at times. They really struggled yesterday against Joe Musgrove as they could not break through with a big hit as they were held to 1 run on a solo homer that came very late in the game.
Today they will face young left-handed pitcher, MacKenzie Gore, who has gotten off to a good start this year as he is currently 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA but let's take a look at who those starts have come against. He has made 2 starts against the Reds who have the worst record in the league, the Cubs who are well below .500, and the Phillies and Guardians who have both been very inconsistent. The best team he faced this year was probably the Braves and the Padres lost that game 5-2.
Gore has been really solid so far in his young career, but I really feel like he is due for some negative regression and today he will be facing a very right-handed power-heavy lineup from the Giants. So, the main question for this game is whether Gore can recreate his early success against one of the toughest lineups he has had to face all year? And I believe the answer is No.
On the other side, the Giants will start Alex Wood, who I think is due for some positive regression after a few tough starts against some very tough teams. Wood's last few starts have come against the Dodgers, Rockies twice, Nationals twice, and the Padres in his first start of the year.
In that first start of the year against the Padres, Wood pitched fairly well but took a no-decision in a game that the Giants would eventually lose 4-2. In that game, Wood struck out 6 batters but did allow 5 hits so it was boom or bust for Wood.
The Padres have been very inconsistent all year on offense and have really been carried offensively by Manny Machado. Machado has struggled a bit versus Wood in his small sample as he is just 1-5 with no RBIs. The Padres lineup as a whole does not have too many at-bats against Wood and that unfamiliarity may prove to be an advantage for Wood today as he throws from an unconventional 3-quarter arm slot from the left side.
Overall, I think the Giants are due for some positive regression and this game also has one of the frequent line indicators that I always reference as the Giants are still considerable favorites even though Gore has a lower ERA than Wood. This has been a big indicator to bet on the favorites in this instance so with that being said, I am rolling with Giants F5 ML at -125 and Giants Full Game ML at -129 for 1U each as my most confident MLB Picks of the day as I think the Giants take game 3 and avoid the sweep.
San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Pick
- Giants F5 ML (-125) (Bet $125 to win $100)
- Giants ML (-129) (Bet $129 to win $100)
