Some people probably just read that pick and their jaw hit the floor, allow me to explain. It is no secret that Pittsburgh got beaten so bad yesterday that Yadier Molina pitched against them. Luckily for us, this game today begins at 0-0 and it’s against a Colorado team who forgets how to baseball on the road. The Rockies are a respectable 19-21 but on the road, they are 5-10. Pittsburgh isn’t a good baseball team, lets not get confused. With that being said, they are 9-13 at home and favorites here for a reason.
The average joe will look at this game and take a team with a better record for plus odds and think his bet is so good he should have played Adam Sandler's role in Uncut Gems. It’s not that simple once you dive into why this line is what it is. Chad Kuhl is on the mound for Colorado and he especially forgets how to play baseball on the road, listen to this. Kuhl on the road in 2021 had a 7.32 ERA, in 2020 he had a 6.86 ERA. His last start this season on the road was against the Giants where he allowed five earned runs in less than five innings of work.
JT Brubaker is on the mound for Pittsburgh and he has been brutal this season. Brubaker has allowed at least two earned runs in eight of his starts but I really have this weird gut feeling he has his best outing today. Last year he had flashes of being really solid and he has a nice but brief history against these Rockies bats. In 20 at-bats against him, they only have three hits against him. I don’t actually expect them to maintain that poor .150 average against him but I don’t think they tee off on him either like we’ve seen him allow in some games this year. Pirates won’t be a sexy play, but we’re not here to make pretty bets we just want to win them. Let's take the team that lost by two touchdowns yesterday and shock the world.
