Milwaukee Brewers vs. St Louis Cardinals Line Movement

Milwaukee Brewers vs. St Louis Cardinals Prediction

The Brewers come into this series with the Cardinals at the top of the NL Central standings and are playing well lately coming off a series win against the Padres. In that series, the Brewers offense was extremely anemic and was only able to score a total of 8 runs in those 3 games but their pitching staff carried the team as they were able to win 2 of 3 behind some masterful pitching performances.

Eric Lauer will take the mound for the Brewers tonight and he has been spectacular this season as he comes into this game with a 4-1 record and an ERA just north of 2 at 2.16. Lauer also has a WHIP of 0.94 meaning he is allowing less than 1 walk/hit per inning which is extremely impressive. He also comes in with 54 strikeouts compared to just 8 walks in just under 42 innings, so by all accounts he has been extremely impressive for the Brewers but will he be able to continue that dominance tonight? I believe the answer is no.

While Lauer’s numbers are very solid, he has faced some very weak competition. On the year he has faced the Pirates, Orioles, Nationals, Marlins, Cubs, Phillies, and Braves, all of whom are under .500 with below average offensive production with the exception of the Braves who have a solid lineup. Lauer will also be facing a Cardinals team who has had a lot of success at the plate this year. They are currently ranked 3rd in the league in team batting average, 5th in team on base percentage, and 4th in least amount of strikeouts this season so they also do a really good job of putting the ball in play.

Another reason why I like the Cardinals tonight is the Wainwright revenge factor. Wainwright got hit around pretty hard in his first start against the Brewers in early April which was one of his worst starts of the season to this point. In that start, he gave up 8 hits (most of the season) and 4 earned runs (most of the season). Wainwright just didn’t have his best stuff that day and the Brewers took full advantage but I really expect a much better performance out of him this time around.

Wainwright is the ultimate competitor and will be facing a brewers team who is not in the best form offensively. Wainwright also loves pitching at home and has historically always done much better in his home starts so overall I think this is a great bounce back and narrative spot for Wainwright to get back on track against their division rival here. This game all features the line dynamic that I always mention of the Cardinals having a starting pitcher with an ERA higher than their opponent and still being lined as favorites. This has been an indication to bet ON the favorite for most of the year and combine that with the Wainwright revenge factor and it makes for a solid play on the Cardinals tonight. With that being said, I am rolling with Cardinals F5 ML -115 and Cardinals Full Game ML at -112 for 1U each as my most confident MLB picks of the night as I think the Cardinals take game 1 of this series behind a strong performance from Wainwright.
