San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction
The Padres have been one of the more impressive teams in the National League this season but one thing that has been an issue for them has been their lack of offense. They have a really solid pitching staff with Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, and Sean Manaea but their offense is what has held them back in a number of games already this season.
Tonight the Padres will face left-handed journeyman Jose Quintana who is having a great start to 2022. He is 1-2 with an impressive 2.43 ERA and seems to be very comfortable pitching for the Pirates. I think one of the only ways the Pirates will be able to keep this game close is behind a strong start from Quintana so will he be able to continue his success tonight? I believe the answer is no.
Quintana got hit around pretty hard by the Cardinals in his last start as he allowed 7 hits, a walk, and 2 earned runs in just 3 2/3rds innings in that game. The Cardinals really made him work and forced him into a lot of deep counts and I see the Padres doing the same thing against him tonight.
On the other side, the Padres will start power left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea, who I believed is primed for a breakout start tonight. This will actually be his second time facing the Pirates this season and he did not fare too well in his first matchup against them as he allowed 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 5 total hits so I expect a much better effort from him this time around.
Overall Manaea has faced some very tough opponents as he has gone against the Giants two times, Braves, and Dodgers already this season. He excelled in his starts against the Reds and Diamondbacks which leads me to believe that he will have a strong start tonight against the lowly Pirates who are similar in talent level to those two.
With that being said, I am rolling with Padres F5 -0.5 at -125 for 1U as my most confident MLB play of the night as I think the Padres get off to a strong start tonight and take a lead into the 6th inning.
