New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Prediction
New York was so impressed by Trevor Williams in his last appearance against the San Francisco Giants, that he will now get the start for tonight's game. Williams has a 4.37 ERA with an 0-3 record. However, he’s been much better recently and probably deserves the start tonight.
In the last 30 days, Williams has had a respectable 4.02 xFIP with 28.8% of strikeouts. He also has allowed just 5.5% of walks in the last 30 days. Williams is allowing some power to righties with an ISO of .233 in the last 30 days, but for the most part, Williams has been very solid in relief, mopping up bad pitching throughout the year.
On the other hand, Washington has a .150 ISO and wOBA of .329 against righties in the last 30 days. The only problem with Washington is that they’re hitting close to 50% of ground balls and only have just three players hitting 21% of line drives or higher against righties in the last 30 days. The Nationals have been able to keep strikeouts down but don’t walk at a very high rate.
The Nationals will hope that Patrick Corbin can stay on track. He got a win in his last start and is now 1-7 to start the year along with a 6.30 ERA. Corbin has a 4.74 xFIP with 14.2% of strikeouts in the last 30 days. He hasn’t been nearly as bad as his ERA in the last 30 days but has allowed a .345 wOBA to righties with an ISO of .223 to righties.
The Mets are clearly heating up right now. But, against lefties, it's just not the same. The offense only has a .165 ISO and wOBA of .289 against lefties in the last 30 days. New York has also had their struggles against Corbin, who keeps them off-balanced a lot of the time. In nine innings pitched, Corbin has allowed just two runs against the Mets this season.
If the Mets can remain patient, they'll get on base and create some havoc. But overall, Corbin has had their number and continues to pitch better against the Mets than most teams. There's reason to think Corbin could put together a good enough outing to keep the total under.
Williams can do the same.
I'll ride with the under knowing that both teams will need to combine for 10 runs to beat us.
