Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction: Can the Giants Finish the Road Sweep?
How many extra innings losses, or losses in general, can the Philadelphia Phillies stomach? Two straight losses in extra innings to start this series against the San Francisco Giants dropped the Phillies to 4-12 in their last 16 games, and manager Joe Girardi’s days at the helm may be numbered.
Philadelphia is now a season-worst eight games below .500 (the first time in four seasons), which is incredibly disappointing this year, considering they have a franchise-record payroll of $224M. In addition, the Phillies are now 12.5 games behind the Mets in the NL East and seven games behind the Giants for the third wild card spot. Thus, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2011 seems unlikely.
Can Philadelphia get any momentum going and avoid a three-game home sweep, or will the Giants win their fourth consecutive game and head into their next series in Miami riding an emotional high?

Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants Prediction
The Giants won Monday’s series opener 5-4 in ten innings on the strength of a power surge, as they got home runs from Wilmer Flores, Evan Longoria, and Curt Casali. Longoria has homered five times in the last six games but may only be available for pinch-hitting duties today as he was removed from yesterday’s game with shoulder soreness.
San Francisco will look to Joc Pederson to pick up the slack offensively if Longoria were to miss time. Pederson has been red-hot of late, and he was responsible for three of the team’s four runs scored in yesterday’s extra-innings win. He has been an RBI machine, with at least one run batted in six of San Francisco’s last seven games.
Philadelphia has the right guy on the mound tonight to end a losing streak in Aaron Nola (2-4, 3.56), especially at home. Nola has a .650 winning percentage, and 3.15 ERA in 90 career home starts versus a .484 winning percentage and 4.22 ERA in 91 road starts.

However, tonight’s opposing pitcher is pretty good himself. Carlos Rodon (4-4, 3.60) went just 1-4 in five May starts, but his 5.67 ERA in the month is inflated by a poor start against St. Louis, where he allowed eight earned runs in 3.2 innings. If you remove that start, Rodon had a respectable 3.51 ERA in his other May starts and allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of the other four.
Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber are a combined 7-for-14 with two home runs off Rodon. Still, Rodon has allowed two hits in nine innings of work against left-handed batters this season, so we expect him to negate Schwarber and, more importantly, Bryce Harper today.
The Giants have won eight consecutive road games against NL East division opponents that held a losing record. As long as San Francisco can stay even with Philadelphia for the time that each starting pitcher is in the game, the Giants have a significant advantage in the late innings, as Philadelphia’s bullpen ranks 29th over the last 14 days with a -0.4 WAR.
