The D-backs got the best of the Pirates last night, pulling out an 8-6 road win. The Pirates stormed back with three runs in the ninth, but it was not enough to complete the comeback. They will look to bounce back this afternoon in front of their home crowd. These two teams were slated to finish at the bottom of the league, but both have been surprisingly better than expected.
With a win today, Arizona would be a .500 team. Their pitching has held up more than people thought, and they have had some timely hitting. Perhaps the best quality of this team is their comeback ability. The Pirates, on the other side of things, are fresh off a sweep over one of the best baseball teams ever assembled.
That’s right; the Pirates swept the LA Dodgers. That may never happen again, but for the Pirates, it had to feel good. They will look to get back to form tonight with young right-hander Roasny Contreas on the bump. If you have not seen this kid throw yet, he has nasty stuff. He is one of the young arms Pittsburgh is counting on for the future. In 17.2 innings, he is supporting an ERA of 2.55 and a WHIP of 1.02. He will be opposed by veteran Zach Davies, who has struggled this season.Â
I am backing the Pirates but on a first five bet. I mentioned it earlier, but Arizona somehow seems to always come back late in games, so I am not giving them that chance today. I also love the pitching matchup, and I want to let Contreas decide my bet, not the bullpen. The Pirates bats should get to Davies, a guy that they have seen and has been bad this season.
