The Twins and Blue Jays play the second game of a three-game series this afternoon, and MLB expert Mike Spector weighs in with his best play.
ANALYSIS

Toronto Blue Jays vs Minnesota Twins Prediction: Can Jose Berrios Get a Win Against His Former Team?

The Minnesota Twins entered last night amid a three-game losing streak (all losses to the Tigers), while the Toronto Blue Jays had a season-high eight-game winning streak and looked invincible for more than a week. Both of those streaks were squashed in a 9-3 Twins rout in the series opener, which was all the more surprising since it was starting pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez’s season debut.

Minnesota belted five home runs in the win, marking the second time they hit five home runs in a game this season. Will Minnesota’s power surge continue today, or will Toronto return to the winning ways that saw them vault into second place in the AL East for a short time?

Read on for our prediction, best play, and the odds for Saturday’s American League clash between the Twins and Blue Jays.

Toronto Blue Jays vs Minnesota Twins Prediction

The primary storyline of this afternoon’s Twins-Blue Jays clash is Toronto’s Jose Berrios (3-2, 5.62) facing his former team, where he spent six seasons of his career. Berrios went 1-1 against his former team last year after being traded to Toronto in July and now faces them for the third time.

Berrios will not be facing a complete Twins roster, as shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Gilberto Celestino are on the COVID-19 IL. In addition, infielder Royce Lewis is out with a right knee bone bruise. However, a more significant reason for Minnesota’s depleted roster in this series is that several Twins failed to meet Canada’s vaccine requirements and are ineligible to play. As a result, Minnesota is without Max Kepler and relief pitchers Emilio Pagan, Caleb Thielbar, and Trevor Megill.

While Minnesota’s roster is depleted, Toronto’s got healthier yesterday, as center fielder George Springer had missed back-to-back games with a non-COVID-19 illness. However, he returned to the lineup on Friday and promptly hit his tenth home run. Springer’s return deepens an already explosive lineup that had gone six consecutive games with at least ten hits before amassing just four hits in last night’s loss.

The Twins have had trouble generating winning streaks lately, as they are 0-4 in their last four games following a win and have not won consecutive games since a six-game winning streak from May 18-24. In addition, they have not been successful in today’s starter, Dylan Bundy’s, last several outings. Minnesota is 0-4 in Bundy’s (3-2, 4.76) last four road starts and is 0-5 in his previous five starts overall. Thus, despite the Twins winning nine of its previous 11 games in Toronto, we like for the Blue Jays to roll to a dominant victory today behind an inspired Berrios.
