ANALYSIS

New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction: Will New York's Dominant Pitching Continue?

The New York Yankees already had the best record in baseball before this current series with the Detroit Tigers started. However, the Yankees continued to flex their muscles with wins in the first two games, outscoring the Tigers 16-0 and improving their record to 38-15.

Oddsmakers clearly expect the Yankees to win their sixth consecutive game tonight, as their -300 moneyline odds are far and away the steepest of any team on Sunday’s slate. However, is there a better value play to be had for those not wanting to pay a heavy premium on the team from the Bronx? Read on for our best play and odds for Sunday’s series finale between the Tigers and Yankees.

Yankees vs. Tigers Line Movement

New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction

New York’s .717 winning percentage through 53 games is historic, as it is its best 53-game start since winning 40 games (.755 winning percentage) in 1998. However, though two games are shy of that pace, pitching is one glaring difference between the 2022 Yankees and the 1998 Yankees. New York’s ERA was 4.21 in that 53-game span, while this year’s Yankees are pitching to a 2.73 ERA.

New York’s dominant pitching has been on full display over the last three games (one against the Angels, two against the Tigers). They have allowed just six hits, one run, two walks, and have struck out 28 batters. Per @BetweenTheNums on Twitter, they are the first team in MLB history to allow six or fewer hits, one run or less, and at most two walks in a three-game span. But, history doesn’t stop there. As Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) pointed out, New York is the first team in the expansion era (since 1961) with a perfect game bid through 6+ innings in back-to-back games.

It is up to Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 3.04) to keep that dominant stretch of pitching going. Montgomery had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders in his last start, ending an 11-start winless streak (which had dated back to September 2021) and earned the victory over the Angels. Though he got nine runs of support in that game, he also tied a career-high with seven innings pitched. Montgomery was the starting pitcher in the only game the Yankees lost to the Tigers this year (4-1 head-to-head) but received no run support in a 3-0 loss, in which he only allowed one run on three hits in six innings.

We do not expect run support to be an issue today, especially after New York’s lineup is bolstered by the activations of Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson off the IL. Thus, we are backing New York’s alternate run line of -2.5 at plus-odds and adding a small play on Detroit’s team total under.
