Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariner Prediction
So Justin Verlander is now playing Seattle for the fourth time on the season. It’s kind of crazy that he is pitching his 11th game of the season and 36% of them have been against the same team but that’s the MLB schedule for you. So overall Verlander has dominated Seattle, in his first two starts he recorded a win both times and pitched two gems. In his most recent game against Seattle, they seemed to have “figured him out”. He struggled heavily and allowed four home runs and six earned runs, safe to say he received a loss on the outing. As a fan of Verlander since he was a young buck in the league, I have noticed how he doesn’t struggle against the same team twice in a row. He will make the adjustments needed to get his revenge and we’re sticking with that tonight.
Seattle has been a disappointment and already won two games in a row, that stops tonight. Even with him getting lit up by Seattle his last start against them he has still only allowed 20 hits in 93 at-bats against him. That is just a .215 average so that game seemed like an anomaly. Verlander is the betting favorite to win the Cy Young for a reason. In order to get the win he needs some help by his bats and bullpen though so let’s get into that. Houston has the best bullpen in the MLB in terms of ERA. They have been dominant and should continue to do so behind a home crowd. If Verlander leaves the game with the lead I feel confident they don’t ruin this for him and us.
On the mound for Seattle is Chris Flexen. This is also his fourth game against Houston and he has been shockingly good against them. Flexen has pitched three games against Houston this year and has only allowed five runs in 18 innings, genuinely not bad. With that being said, I don’t find that sustainable. The 27 year old righty still holds a 5.04 road ERA and can get lit up in any outing. I think he’s more likely to allow three runs again than replicate only allowing one run for the third time. I just don’t think he has the talent to consistently pitch well against a lineup like this. It wouldn’t shock me one bit if the Astros come out mad after losing yesterday and knock him around bad. Let's hope that’s the case and we see some must-see JV.
