San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies Prediction
Logan Webb gets the nod for the Giants today, and he has been decent with a 3.82 ERA and 5-1 record. His WHIP is only 1.17, which is 32nd in the league. Webb's pitch arsenal is made up solely of a sinker, changeup, and slider, and he throws all three equally at around 30% of the time on each pitch. His slider is consistently painted in the bottom corner of the zone, and he gets batters to chase often on it. His chase rate is in the 85th percentile of all pitchers.
His changeup is the real star, however, and he likes to throw this pitch low in the zone, and batters are hitting just .178 off his changeup this year. Webb has had success against the Rockies as well. In his last three starts, he has gone seven innings with three earned runs, seven innings with three runs again, then six innings with zero earned runs. The previous two were in Coors Field as well, where many pitchers struggle.
Logan Webb is also one of the most profitable first five bets this season. He is 8-2-1 on the first five lines in his 11 starts this year. Conversely, Austin Gomber is among the least profitable pitchers to back on the first five line this year. Gomber is 2-7-1 on the first five lines in his 10 starts this season.
Austin Gomber is 2-6 on the year with a 6.54 ERA. His season has been tough, and his numbers are even slightly worse on the road, where he is 1-3 with a 6.94 ERA. Gomber has pitched against the Giants this season already, and in this start on the road, he allowed 5 runs in just 5.1 innings of work. Gomber actually started the year well and had a 3.86 ERA in April in four starts. It's been all downhill recently, however, and it's hard to make a case for him in this spot today.
This is a simple situation of not overthinking it. Logan Webb is one of the most profitable first five bets this season, and Gomber is the exact opposite. The Giants are 9-0-1 on the first five lines in their last 10 games against the Rockies. Gomber has given up 19 combined runs in his previous three starts against the Giants.
All this sounds like I'm taking the first five-run line on the Giants, but there is simply too much juice. The run line is -160 on most books, and I hate taking high juice in MLB. The Rockies have one of the worst bullpens in the league, which means I expect the Giants to jump out early on the Rockies and build on the lead. I'm taking the Giants -1.5 for the game to lower the juice we have to eat.
