The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers open a four-game series tonight in Detroit, and MLB expert Mike Spector weighs in with his best play.
ANALYSIS

Detroit Tigers vs Texas Rangers Prediction: Can Martin Perez Dominate Against the Tigers?

The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers have lost six consecutive games between them, as they are coming off series losses to the Astros and White Sox, respectively. Both teams have struggled for some time now, as Texas has won just one of its last five series, while Detroit has not won any of its previous four and is 1-5 in the first six games of a ten-game homestand.

The Tigers have won five consecutive meetings against the Rangers dating back to last year and the previous four in Detroit. Will that trend continue, or will Texas prove it is the better team with its best pitcher on the mound? Maybe we should be asking, can the Tigers score a run?

Read on for our prediction, best play, and odds for Thursday’s series finale between the Rangers and Tigers.

Detroit Tigers vs Texas Rangers Prediction

Detroit struggles not only lately, but all season has largely been due to an inept offense. The Tigers are the lowest-scoring team in the majors by a wide margin, as they have 168 runs while all other teams have at least 208. Tigers hitters struck out 14 times on Tuesday and left nine runners on base, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. They followed that up with a shutout loss on Wednesday, with just four hits (all singles) to go along with six strikeouts.

Things do not get easier for the Tigers when facing Martin Perez (4-2, 2.18), who was the American League Pitcher of the Month in May. He finished the month with a 4-0 record, 0.64 ERA, 33 strikeouts over 42.1 innings, and a 1.4 WAR. Perez’s ERA jumped from 1.56 to 2.18 with his last poor start at the White Sox, as he allowed six earned runs in five innings. However, Chicago’s offense is one of the best in the league against southpaws. And while Detroit’s offense ranks in the top ten in batting average and BABIP against lefties, they have not done much with those hits, ranking 28th with a .646 OPS.

Opposing Perez is Tigers rookie Beau Brieske (1-5, 4.34), who is coming off his first career win (in his ninth start). Brieske has looked impressive the last two outings, holding two of the American League’s most dominant lineups (Yankees and Blue Jays) to two earned runs (on two solo home runs) over 11.2 innings. Furthermore, he walked just one batter in that span while striking out nine, which is encouraging considering he had walked at least two batters in five of his first seven starts.

The under is 6-2 in Detroit’s last eight home games and is 34-15-2 in its previous 51 games against a left-handed starting pitcher. They have not faced many lefties in that span hotter than Perez and coupled with Brieske’s good run of late, we expect runs to be at a premium tonight.
