This juice is worth drinking. Arizona has scored 1 run in 2 of their last 3 games and gets a tough matchup for them today. Sean Manaea is on the bump for San Diego and although he hasn’t had his best season he did have his best start of the season against this same Arizona team. Manaea’s first start of the year he went 7 hitless innings against them, not just scoreless innings, hitless. He was on a pitch count due to a short spring training but was on pace to throw a complete game no-hitter. In order for us to lose this bet we need Arizona to score 4 or more, they haven’t even demonstrated that they can hit this guy.
Obviously, that start he had against them was great but what about the long-term history, what if it’s just an anomaly? Luckily for us, that isn’t the case. These Diamondbacks have 43 plate appearances against him, and only 6 have resulted in hits. That would be a .139 batting average against Manaea. I do like the under 2.5 earned runs prop for Sean but I’ll take the extra run of insurance and trust the bullpen. The Padres have the 10th best bullpen in baseball and have handled themselves nicely against Arizona thus far.
Arizona bats .232 against lefties which isn't great but not horrible. Manaea has too good of a history to ignore and this feels like a get right spot for him. I see a pitcher's duel between Gallen and Manaea and think this game ends low scoring. Let's hope for no 3-3 headed into extras sweatiness. We are risking extra innings as opposed to just taking the under 2.5 Manaea earned runs but I’m trusting my gut here. Manaea could allow exactly 3 and the bullpen could show up and settle the storm. This probably won’t be a popular pick today so hopefully the sportsbooks relax on this one and let us all place it without them having crazy line movement.
