Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies Prediction
Before one makes a wager on tonight’s game, they should be aware of the pitching changes for both teams, as each has a different starting pitcher than initially planned at the beginning of the series.
Colorado Jose Urena makes his Rockies debut after being signed in mid-May. The former Marlins and Tigers starter had been pitching at Triple-A as part of a minor league deal, and he allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings in his last start on June 29. Overall, Urena has a 7.29 ERA in five minor league starts and is called up to replace the injured Antonio Senzatela, who landed on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. Urena is opposed by Los Angeles’ Mitch White (0-1, 3.93), whose originally scheduled start was pushed back a day to make room for rookie Ryan Pepiot in the rotation. Pepiot has been used to patch together starts in place of the injured Walker Buehler and when Clayton Kershaw was on the IL.
Plugging in players as replacements for injured starters comes much easier for the Dodgers with their $310M payroll than it does for the Rockies, which is also playing out on the field in the everyday lineup. Outfielder Trayce Thompson is now in his second stint in Los Angeles, as he has been used to fill in for the injured Chris Taylor. Thompson has been on a tear over the last seven games, going 6-for-17 (.353) with three extra-base hits and four RBI.
The Dodgers seemingly have an embarrassment of riches again in the lineup, especially since Mookie Betts is back from injury and promptly belted his 18th home run last night. In addition, Max Muncy is making up for the loss of Taylor at the right time, overcoming most of his struggles to this point with three home runs in the last seven games.
The Dodgers have more than enough weapons to throw at Urena tonight, and it will feel like he is being thrown to the wolves with a date against Los Angeles in his first start. Los Angeles has been underdogs twice this year with White on the mound, indicating what oddsmakers think of the Dodgers’ back-of-the-rotation starter. However, White should settle in nicely tonight as the team builds him a comfortable early lead. To avoid laying the massive -335 moneyline odds with the Dodgers, we are stacking a pair of run line plays (one an alternate RL play) to cash.
