ANALYSIS

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs Prediction: Will Tony Gonsolin Notch Win Number 11?

We all made predictions before the season began. But nobody had Tony Gonsolin being 10-0 with a 1.54 ERA in the middle of July.

But here we are. The Dodgers are currently 52-29 on the season and Tony Gonsolin has been their ace pitcher. He'll get another turn in the rotation tonight, taking on the 34-48 Chicago Cubs.

Currently, the Dodgers have the best record in the National League. Can they maintain that record against a lackluster Chicago team?

Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for Thursday's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs Prediction

The Los Angeles Dodgers will send out Tony Gonsolin for tonight's game against the Cubs. Gonsolin is currently 10-0 with a 1.54 ERA on the season.

He's putting up video game-like numbers, however, he still has an xFIP of 4.66 in the last 30 days. Eventually, things are going to catch up to him. He's only earned 32.1% of ground balls and has a BABIP of .162 in the last 30 days.

The Cubs have a .143 ISO and wOBA of .325 in the last 30 days against righties. With that said, the Cubs still have a lot of potential to get guys on base between Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Patrick Wisdom, Alfonso Rivas, and Christopher Morel. All of those batters are hitting a wOBA of above .340 in the last 30 days against righties.

Plus, the Cubs are hitting 25.2% of line drives against righties in the last 30 days with their projected roster. Gonsolin isn't going to have it that easy.

On the other hand, it'll be Mark Leiter Jr. on the mound for the Cubs. Leiter is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA on the season but actually has a 3.59 xFIP in the last 30 days.

With his last 50 plate appearances, he's struck out 30% of batters and has earned 53.3% of ground balls while allowing just 13.3% of line drives.

Leiter, analytically, has been better than Gonsolin in the last 30 days.

Now, Leiter won't have it easy against the Dodgers. But the Dodgers also struggled to score against the Rockies last night, scoring just two runs in a low-scoring affair.

Leiter's allowing plenty of hard contact that could end up biting him, but for now, I'm confident in Gonsolin and Leiter to keep this game close through the first five innings.

Give me the Under 4.5 in the first five innings between the Cubs and Dodgers tonight.
