San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants Top Pick: Should You Back Manny Machado and the Padres Bats?
The Padres and Giants will close out a four-game series from Petco Park this afternoon. The Padres currently lead the series 2-1 after taking the first two games and then dropping last night's affair 1-3.
The pitching has been excellent on both sides throughout the series, as the only team to score more than three runs in a game this series was the Padres in game two. So what's the best play for the series closer this Sunday afternoon? Let's dive into my prediction, best play, and the odds for the Padres vs Giants game today.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction
Mackenzie Gore gets the nod for the Padres today, and the rookie is 4-3 with a 3.18 ERA on the season. Gore is only 23 years old, but he looks excellent to start his big league career. Gore has really only had two bad starts so far, and they were back-to-back games pitched against the Rockies, where Gore allowed 14 runs in just 6.1 innings combined. Other than that, the rookie is impressive. Gore works heavily behind his fastball, which is his best pitch that batters are hitting just .209 off of. He gets lots of weak contact, and low line drives.
The most interesting part of Gore's numbers is his day/night splits. During day starts, Gore is 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA in six starts. During night starts, Gore is 1-3 with a 6.07 ERA in six starts. Six starts during both the night and day and a 5.31 change in ERA. That is one of the most dramatic day/night splits I have seen this year. Well, today is a day start. That bodes well for the Padres. Gore already has one start against the Giants this year, and he went six innings with just one earned run.
In the other dugout, it will be Alex Wood taking the mound for the Giants today. Wood is 5-7 on the season with a 4.83 ERA. That ERA rises on the road, where he is 3-4 with a 5.14 ERA. Remember those splits for Gore in day and night starts? Well, Wood is almost the opposite.
Wood is 3-4 with a 6.75 ERA in seven day starts and 2-3 with a 3.59 ERA in nine night starts. He is getting a rough combination of his worst splits today, a road start during the day. This will also be Wood's third start against the Padres this season, and they have banged him up a bit. In 7.1 combined innings against the Padres this season, Wood has allowed seven runs for just under a 9.0 ERA. He also had a WHIP of 2.18 in those two starts, and anything above two is pretty bad for any pitcher. Both of those starts were also at home, and now he has to travel to Petco Park.
The Padres are set up perfectly for another quality start behind Mackenzie Gore. The Padres also have the second-best record in the MLB when facing left-handed starters at 20-10. I expect them to get to Wood in this game and take the series 3-1. Back the Padres this afternoon.
