San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs Prediction
The Giants and Cubs will meet for the series finale of a four-game series in Oracle Park. The Giants enter the finale with a 2-1 series lead after taking the first and third games. It will be an uncharacteristically cold night for July in San Francisco, as the temperature will go down to the low 60s by game time. With the unusually low temps, a pitcher-friendly park, and two good pitchers on the bump, I am looking at the under tonight.
Adrian Sampson has been a bright spot in the Cubs rotation and is one of the most consistent pitchers for the team. He is 0-1 with a 3.2 ERA on the season, but his pitcher record doesn't tell the whole story. Sampson constantly puts his team in winnable situations, but the lack of run support has led to his losses. The Cubs are 4-4 when Sampson starts, and he is coming off a seven-inning outing with only two earned runs against the Pirates. Sampson has allowed over two runs in just two of his seven starts this season and did not allow more than two runs in any start last season. His ERA is actually lower on the road. He has a 3.45 ERA at home in six games and a 2.5 ERA on the road in two starts. Tonight, he faces a beat-up giants team that is missing some key pieces.
The Giants are still banged up and are missing significant pieces of offense in Brandon Crawford, Joc Pederson, Evan Longoria, and a few others. This banged-up lineup will send out Carlos Rodon to try to get the series win at home tonight. Rodon is 8-6 on the season with a 3.18 ERA, which lowers to 2.05 at home. Rodon is coming off two of his worst outings on the season. However, both were on the road. I expect Rodon to come out tonight locked in to get bay on track, given he is one of the best pitchers when pitching at home. The Cubs are also 10-2 to the under in their last 12 games on the road against left-handed pitchers. The Cubs have hit worse against lefties all season, so I expect a low-scoring game from the offense.
The weather is cold, the pitchers are good in their respective situations, and there are injuries on the home side. All this to say that I don't see many runs coming across the plate tonight. The under is the play here.
