San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction
If you like watching really good southpaws pitch, you might want to tune into tonight's game.
Left-handed pitcher, Alex Wood, will get the start for the Giants, looking to get San Francisco back to .500. He's currently 7-8 record with a 4.11 ERA on the season.
However, in the last 30 days, Wood's been better. He has a 3.20 xFIP in the last 30 days with 26.9% of strikeouts and 4.8% of walks in that time frame. In that time frame, Wood has earned 54.3% of ground balls and has limited line drives to 18.6%, which is also very good.
Wood won't have an easy task tonight against the Dodgers though. The Dodgers have hit a .254 ISO and wOBA of .363 in the last 30 days with their projected lineup. Only Will Smith and Austin Barnes have struggled against lefties with power. However, Smith still has a .419 wOBA against lefties and is a major threat regardless of his lack of power.
The Dodgers have also hit just 30.9% of ground balls against lefties and have knocked 22.2% of line drives against lefties as well with their projected lineup. If they minimize grounders against Wood, Wood might struggle a little.
On the other hand, Tyler Anderson will get the call for the Dodgers. He's another left-handed pitcher, having an incredible year with an 11-1 record on the season. He also has a solid 2.61 ERA. To be fair, he hasn’t pitched nearly as well in the last 30 days, as he’s holding a 4.39 xFIP with just 18.8% of strikeouts.
Batters are still having trouble finding power against Anderson from both sides of the plate. The Giants' projected lineup hasn't had much trouble, however.
The Giants have dominated lefties with a .269 ISO and wOBA of .387 in the last 30 days using their projected lineup. To be fair, some of these stats are coming from before the All-Star Break. They were much better offensively than they are now.
The Giants are striking out nearly 24% of the time in the last 30 days against lefties, despite all of the quality analytic numbers they’re putting up in the other categories like ISO, wOBA, and BB% categories.
In the last 30 days, the Giants have six batters hitting a high ISO and also have six players hitting a high wOBA against lefties in the last 30 days. If strikeouts are limited against Anderson, the Giants should be able to put up a couple of runs against the Dodgers early.
Give me the Giants +.5 in the first five innings.
