You all know I tend to love sniping totals at lower lines in good spots for it but I do not mind a number like this one when I feel like the wager is warranted; betting on a number at 12 or something is a different story than 9 or 8.5, that is still fine in my eyes. I am not saying those high totals don’t hit because they do, I just believe the margin for error is so much smaller.
You all know that a one-run game can bust open in the eighth inning out of nowhere and in the same sense there can be baserunners and opportunities galore in a game but teams can fail to push runs across. it is a lot harder to hit a total and the margins by which they will is all reliant on the pace usually. The term it’s not under till it's over is real and we can sneak out totals late we already have this year but when I handicap a game I see that as the worst-case scenario usually. I like seeing a total clear by a few runs in my head and I see it here, that’s it.
The Phillies obviously lost some luster with Bryce Harper going down for the season but they are still slugging and have plenty of guys who can do damage tonight against Patrick Corbin. The once-strong starter has stayed consistent as far as making his starts these last two seasons but his performance has fallen off a cliff and he is now a consistent fade. He leads the league in losses and is sporting a 6.57 ERA and WHIP just shy of two.
The Nationals lineup is far less powerful but they still face a southpaw today in Ranger Suarez and should contribute if this turns into a slugfest.
