Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees Prediction
We're getting a rematch between Gerrit Cole and Luis Castillo tonight. Cole struggled in his last start against the Mariners, allowing six runs on seven hits with three home runs. However, he also tallied eight strikeouts and settled down after a brutal first inning. On the season, Cole is 9-4 with a 3.56 ERA. He's been really good but has had weird innings that have led to multiple runs and weird starts. In the last 30 days, Cole has had a 2.53 xFIP with a 35.9% strikeout rate. Any team will take that any day. Cole is putting up ace numbers but randomly putting together bad innings that hurt him. Anyway, he's taking on a Mariners lineup that still has a .281 wOBA against righties in the last 30 days. Cole has the advantage, he'll just need to keep the ball in the yard when he goes up against Ty France, Mitch Haniger, Jesse Winker, and Carlos Santana. All of those batters have inflated ISO numbers, although Haniger, just came back into the lineup.

On the other hand, Luis Castillo did his part for the Mariners in his first game with Seattle. He went 6.2 innings and allowed three earned runs along with eight strikeouts and one walk. Castillo was New York's first choice at the trade deadline but Seattle outbid the Yankees and got their guy. Castillo has a 2.95 ERA on the season and a 4.01 xFIP in the last 30 days. He's struck out 28.9% of batters but has struggled to earn ground balls, which is odd for Castillo. The Yankees will no longer have Matt Carpenter in the lineup, after he fractured his foot, but could have Anthony Rizzo back in the lineup. He's been dealing with a back injury but would be a nice addition to the lineup against Castillo. With Rizzo in the lineup, the Yankees would have a .163 ISO and wOBA of .340 against righties in the last 30 days. Most of the power is coming from the top of the order, but the reality is, that the Yankees look better on paper against Castillo in comparison to the Mariners' offense against Cole. You won't see the Yankees at -130 with Gerrit Cole on the mound very often. So take it while you see it.
