Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Picks, Odds: Can San Diego Hold Onto the Wild Card Spot?
At the MLB Trade Deadline, the San Diego Padres made headlines with some insane moves. They added Juan Soto from the Nationals along with Josh Bell. They also said Josh Hader from the Brewers finished their haul by adding Brandon Drury from the Reds. And none of these guys have performed all while Fernando Tatis Jr. gets caught cheating.
So now the Padres are just two games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the final Wild Card spot. It will be an epic collapse for the second straight season if the Padres don't hold on to a Wild Card spot. Tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks is as crucial as ever. Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres Prediction
The Arizona Diamondbacks will debut Drey Jameson for tonight's game against the Padres. Jameson was drafted 34th overall out of Ball State in 2019. He's a right-handed pitcher with a career 5.29 ERA in the minors. In 2022, Jameson has an ERA of 6.31 with a WHIP of 1.49 through 132.2 innings of work. He's started 25 of 26 games this season in the PCL and Texas Leagues.
He went 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA through 18.2 innings in Double-A. He was then called up to Triple-A and has gone 5-12 with a 6.95 ERA through 114 innings. But apparently, the Diamondbacks don't want to give up on their 1C pick in 2019. So they're giving him an opportunity tonight.
San Diego has struggled against righties lately, hitting a .127 ISO and wOBA of .292 against righties over the last 30 days. Manny Machado is the only hitter having consistent success against righties.
However, the Padres have been able to work 12.7% of walks and should be able to get some walks against Jameson in this game. Plus, the Padres have hit under 40% of ground balls, and nearly 20% of line drives against righties in that same time frame of 30 days.
On the flip side, Sean Manaea will get the start for the Padres. He's 7-8 with a 5.23 ERA on the season. However, he's been better as of late, holding a 4.54 xFIP with 22% of strikeouts and just 2.2% of walks.
Manaea isn't a ground ball pitcher and has struggled more against righties than lefties over the last month. Righties are hitting a .405 ISO wOBA and ISO of .338 over his previous 78 plate appearances against righties.
The only two righties in the Arizona lineup that have had success against lefties, as right-handed batters, are Katel Marte and Stone Garrett. Instead, the Diamondbacks have hit 48.9% of grounders, and just 17% of line drives against lefties with their projected lineup over the last 30 days.
Manaea hasn't been elite this season, but he's capable of putting together good performances. On the other hand, Jameson has struggled in Triple-A and will now have to take on elite hitters like Juan Soto and Manny Machado.
I'll back the Padres on the moneyline.
