The Los Angeles Angels take on the Oakland Athletics tonight for the second game of their three-game series. Can Adrian Martinez Shut Down the Angels? John Hyslop answers.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction, Pick: Can Adrian Martinez Shut Down the Angels?

In my haste today, I threw out a banger that went off at noon. Normally that's not an issue but today it is since we don't have any more action. Had I not noticed, we could have been sitting around with no bets tonight. That would have been a tragedy. Lucky for us, I saw the writing on the wall and not only did I correct it, but I also found something that has no chance of losing. You don't see that every day. Normally, a play like this comes out but falls flat on its face because it wasn't well thought out. But if you read my Strikeout Watch List for today, you were probably already on this guy. You've already caught a whiff of his greatness. Now we just have to make it official.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics Pick

Adrian Martinez 5+ Strikeouts (+102) (Bet $100 to win $102)

*Odds available at FanDuel at time of publishing*

We're at FanDuel for this one because they are the only ones showing a plus moneyline. It's really that simple. DraftKings wants -115 for this one and so does BetMGM. I just can't do it but if you have to, then you have to. Your hands are tied. Another reason to use FanDuel here is that this is a moonshot. You could go 6+ (+220), 7+ (+450) or even 8+ (+900). Hell, 9+ is sitting at +1700. He's never gone higher than seven before but that doesn't mean he can't.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics Prediction

Here's the thing about this guy. We don't know a lot about him. We just don't. All I do know is that in AAA this season, he was a double-digit strikeout per nine guy. At all levels in his career, he has more strikeouts than innings pitched. I know minor league numbers are in there but what do you want me to do? Not count them? If we do that then we have nothing to count. I'd rather count here than not count. It just feels right.

So far in the Majors, Martinez looks to be a serviceable 4.5 guy. Especially if he stays at plus money. Getting tagged with a 4.5 each start helps bettors who want a low bar to getting over as well as people who want to go to the moon with a 6+, 7+, etc move. We all win here. The thing is, he's gone over this number in four of his last six starts. His only real issue is the fact that he gets shelled all the time but here's the thing, the Athletics don't really take him out. He's thrown 80+ pitches in his last three starts and he's given up at least four runs in all of them.

Tonight Martinez could get shelled again but I don't think it matters. He's got the Los Angeles Angels on the docket and they have struck out more than any other MLB team on the planet this season. They've been better over the last two weeks but they've still fanned 113 times in their last 406 at-bats. Not great. I would love to see a lineup but one hasn't been released yet. If we see Jo Adell, Logan O'Hoppe, Livan Soto, Mickey Moniak, Mike Ford, and Mike Trout, I think we have a decent shot at getting to the moon. Get your space suits ready.
