ANALYSIS

Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Diego Padres Prediction, Pick, and Odds: Can Mike Clevinger Make Series 2-2?

The Phillies have taken a massive 2-1 lead in the series and still have two more games at home. The Phillies are still undefeated at home in the playoffs and now have the Padres with their backs against the wall. Even though this is not an elimination game, it is essentially a must-win game for the Padres. If they lose, the Phillies will have three close-out games in a row, with one of them being at home. Can the Padres even up the series tonight? Let's break it down with our Phillies vs. Padres prediction, pick, and odds.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Diego Padres Prediction

The Padres will send out Mike Clevinger to attempt to even up the series tonight. Clevinger had a tough time out in his first playoff start, going 2.2 innings against the Dodgers and allowing four earned runs. Clevinger went 7-7 this season with a 4.33 ERA and had one start against the Phillies, where he went five innings without an earned run. Clevinger has not been the best starter in the Padres rotation, but the hope is he can do a bit better in this start than his start against the Dodgers. Luckily, the Phillies don't have their best arm on the mound, either.

Bailey Falter is 6-4 on the season with a 3.86 ERA. Falter has not pitched in the postseason this season yet, and has actually never pitched in the postseason before. He gets the task of attempting to hold on to a 2-1 series lead against a dangerous lineup in the Padres. It's safe to say he may have a few nerves to start. He will likely be on a short leash tonight before Rob Thompson goes to the bullpen. This will be an open game from there, as the Phillies had a shaky bullpen this season. They also used two of their best bullpen arms yesterday in Jose Alvarado and Seranthony Dominguez. If Falter can't make it at least four innings here, it will be a tough game for the bullpen to cover.

The Padres went 15-8 behind Mike Clevinger this season. While Clevinger isn't their ace, he is a decent arm that can open up the way for the bullpen. The Padres went 26-25 as a dog this season, which may not instill much confidence, but they are facing Bailey Falter and a shaky bullpen that used two of their best arms yesterday. The Phillies have not lost a home game yet in the postseason, but it feels like this could be the one with Falter starting. This game is a must-win for the Padres, and I think they treat it as such. They will be aggressive on the bases and use their top arms out of the bullpen. The Padres tie the series tonight.
