NBA Predictions: Monday May 10
Six games on Monday, all of which feature teams fighting for something.
On the surface, it looks like the Atlanta Hawks are about to march to an easy W.
They’re at home, they’ve been playing well, and they’re still fighting to stay in the 4/5 matchup in the East.
As for Washington, their best player is going to miss this game, as Bradley Beal has a bad hammy that could keep him out for the rest of the regular season. That’s a bad combination.
But assuming the Wizards are cooked is to ignore the brilliant stretch of play being put forth by the former league MVP, Russell Westbrook. Over the Wizards’ last 19 games, Russ is putting up 22, 14 & 14 on 46 percent shooting. Washington is 15-4 in that time, and Westbrook has a positive 7.1 net rating when he’s played.
Beal’s on-court rating is a hair better at plus 7.2, but the fact that the Wizards are still outscoring teams by 2.6 points per 100 possessions when Beal has sat during this hot stretch indicates that Russ has become their engine.
The Hawks have no good answer for slowing down a guy who just tied Oscar Robertson for all time triple doubles. He can pass the Big O tonight. He will…with a win attached to the effort.
The Pelicans just keep fighting.
No Zion Williamson? No problem for New Orleans, who went into Charlotte and took care of business without their star on Sunday night.
Brandon Ingram was also out for that one, but in the absence of their two stars, other Pelicans stepped up, none more so than Eric Bledsoe, who had arguably his best game of the season with 24 points and 11 assists.
The win leaves the Pels just 1.5 games back of the Spurs with four games remaining for them and five left for San Antonio. All five are brutal for the Spurs, so New Orleans still very much has life.
But they need to win tonight. Their next three come against Dallas, Golden State and the Lakers, so this is the closest they’ll get to an evenly matched opponent. The Grizzlies are just 3-5 on the court and against the spread in their last eight.
It feels like Memphis might be running out of gas at the wrong time, what with a 21st ranked negative 1.2 net rating over their last 15 games. If nothing else, they certainly shouldn’t be giving as many points as they are here.
Milwaukee Bucks vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Predictions
Speaking of running out of gas, the Spurs have lost six of seven, including the last three L’s by an average of 22 points. The Bucks need this to keep pace with the Nets in the East. They’ll take care of business.
Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Predictions
The Jazz are back to their dominating ways, having won five straight as they march towards the best record in the NBA. The Warriors are somewhat securely in the play-in. Give the points on the road.
Houston Rockets vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Predictions
The tank shows no signs of letting up in Houston, and Portland is in position to grab the sixth seed. They will not take this matchup lightly.
Indiana Pacers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Predictions
For as much as Indy’s season has gone to the dogs, they’re still far better than the Cavs, who couldn’t even muster a competitive effort after Luka Doncic got tossed from their game against Dallas on Sunday night. They don’t stand a chance against a desperate Pacer team that has still showed some grit.
