Sean Highkin is back to break down his Trail Blazers vs. Jazz prediction

NBA Predictons - Blazers vs. Jazz Prediction- 12 May 2021

Sean Highkin is back on OddsChecker with picks for three of today's NBA clashes.

Pelicans vs. Mavericks Prediction

Coming off a blowout loss to the Grizzlies on Monday, Dallas can’t be trusted enough to win big against a New Orleans team clinging to its life to sneak into the play-in tournament. Without Zion Williamson, the Mavs are at a significant talent advantage here, but their lack of consistency down the stretch as well as being on the second night of a back-to-back make it hard to pick them as double-digit favorites. The Pelicans will at least keep it close enough to make them sweat.

The pick: Pelicans +10 @ -110 (Click here to bet)

Blazers vs. Jazz Prediction

The Jazz are favored at home in this game despite being without Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley Jr., but given where both teams are at in the playoff race, it’s smart to take Portland. The Suns’ Tuesday night loss to the Warriors created a little more distance between Utah and Phoenix for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. The Suns can technically still catch the Jazz, but it’s becoming less and less likely. Portland, meanwhile, has won eight of its past nine games and can all but ensure a top-six seed with just one more win. They’re peaking at the right time and against a shorthanded Jazz team, they have a prime opportunity to help their position. If you want to take the Blazers to win outright, the moneyline right now is +150 at MGM. But taking them to cover a 4.5-point spread and keep it close is the safe pick here. Either way, Portland has the health advantage and has more at stake in avoiding the play-in than do the Jazz, who are locked into a top-two seed in the west.

The pick: Blazers +4.5 @ -109 (Click here to bet)

Rockets vs. Lakers Prediction

Taking a swing on the Rockets here seems preposterous, but there’s a case to make for it. Although LeBron James is expected to return to the Lakers’ lineup, Anthony Davis’ status is up in the air—following LA’s grind-it-out overtime win over New York on Tuesday, he said he doesn’t know whether he’ll play or not. The win over the Knicks was huge, but the Lakers are playing desperate right now and essentially have to win out in their final three games in order to avoid the play-in. Playing desperate and having this lack of lineup continuity isn’t a great combination, especially on the second half of a back-to-back. And these Rockets, bad as they are, can hang with better teams on the right night. Against Portland on Monday, despite giving up 50 points in the first quarter, they kept the game close and stayed in striking distance well into the fourth quarter before running out of steam. On paper, this is a game the Lakers should run away with, but at odds this high, it could be worth a home-run swing on the Rockets and the upset.
