Hornets vs. Pacers
Our first look at the NBA’s brand new Play-In Tournament comes to us from the Eastern Conference in the No. 9 seed vs. No. 10 seed game. The Hornets, who got into the playoffs as the tenth and final seed, take on the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night. It’s an interesting matchup that features two teams that have struggled to put wins together. Let’s break it down.
The Hornets come limping into the 2021 NBA Playoffs, having won just three of their last 10 games. In the final game of the season, all they needed to do was beat the Wizards to clinch the 8th seed in the Play-In Tournament. They proceeded to let Russell Westbrook put up a triple double, getting outscored by 16 in the fourth quarter to lose by five.
I’m torn on this Hornets team. I like a lot of the pieces they have. LaMelo Ball is the runaway Rookie of the Year candidate, Terry Rozier looks great, Gordon Hayward has been a rock and guys like Devonte’ Graham, PJ Washington and Miles Bridges look like solid pieces. But, when they step on the court of late they leave a lot to be desired.
Outside of Hayward and Rozier, the players I mentioned above still lack experience. LaMelo Ball is two years away from having his first legal drink and while he’s a fantastic player, I’m not sure he’s ready to lead this team on a playoff run.
Are the Pacers some world-beating team? No, of course not. But they have some talent on their roster and play hard. Domantas Sabonis is a beast, Caris LeVert continues to be one of the most underrated players in the NBA and Doug McDermott seems to be in the middle of a career resurgence as of late.
The Pacers can go big with Sabonis in the middle. Or, if the Hornets want to run 6-foot-7 PJ Washington as their center, Oshae Brissett lets the Pacers counter and play their own style of small ball.
We know Sabonis is going to score. The question is can guys like LeVert, Brissett and McDermott put up enough points around him to keep up with the Hornets talent on offense? We’ll see.
Hornets vs. Pacers Prediction
In a vacuum, this Hornets team is better than the Pacers. They have more talent on both ends and possess the ability to beat you in a bunch of different ways. But, I can’t really back them with how they’ve played lately. They’ve lost five straight and are 17-19 ATS on the road this season. The future is bright in Charlotte, I’m just not sure that future starts on Tuesday. I think we get a 5-8 point Pacers win as they move on in the Play-In Tournament.
