Spurs vs. Grizzlies

If you’re the Grizzlies, you can’t be happy with ending up as the No. 9 seed in the Play-In Tournament. Had you beaten the Warriors in the final game of the season, you’d be the No. 7 seed and have a much easier path. Instead, you’re here playing the Spurs and need to make a run to get into the actual playoffs.

San Antonio Spurs

If you made me pick the worst team in the entire playoffs, regardless of conference, I think San Antonio would be my pick. They come in having lost four straight and eight of their last ten game prior to the postseason.

This is a team that essentially gave up midway through the season, allowing their star forward LaMarcus Aldridge to leave. So, they limped into the newly expanded playoffs, led by DeMar DeRozan, and don’t have much of an identity outside of that.

The one thing they have going for them is Greg Popovich, perhaps the best head coach in the NBA. They have postseason experience, they’re the savvier veteran team, but outside of that, they lack a lot of the individual scoring needed to hang around with Memphis.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Ja Morant-led Grizzlies are going to be making playoff appearances for a long time to come, with this season being just a preview of down the road. Morant leads the way for the Grizz offensively, averaging 19.1 points per game and 7.4 assists, but it’s two other players that I think are the keys for Memphis.

Dillon Brooks and Jonas Valanciunas are the most important players on this Memphis Grizzlies team. Valanciunas is an absolute force down low, averaging 12.5 rebounds per game. He also is 12th in the NBA in PER at 24.47. If he can dominate the painted area, Memphis will run away with this game.

As for Brooks, you need to look no further than the Warriors game to see how much he means to this team. Memphis was in the middle of a massive comeback effort and had just tied the game when Brooks fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. The second he left the game, Steph Curry took over and it was curtains for the Grizzlies hope of a seven seed.

Spurs vs. Grizzlies Prediction

I’m not sure there is a team I’d feel confident betting the Spurs to beat right now in the entire NBA. They lack talent on the roster and they’re playing bad basketball right now. An absolutely deadly combo. Memphis is far from a perfect team, they probably still won’t advance out of the Play-In Tournament, but they are far superior to the Spurs. Not only am I backing them at the -3.5 spread, I’ll be looking to make a play on some alternate lines at around the 8-10 point range, depending on the price I get. But, for today, the official play is Memphis -3.5.
