Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets

This will end up being one of the closest, most interesting series of the entire first round. Both these teams can score in bunches and have top-tier players throughout the roster. The reason this matchup is so intriguing is because it’s the dominant backcourt of Portland vs. Denver’s MVP-led frontcourt. They both have incredible talent but they win games in different ways. Which way will prevail?

Portland Trail Blazers

Portland is a slightly better than average team against the spread this season. They cover in 52.8% of their games and have won five of their last seven games outright and eight of their last 10. Dame Lillard is still one of the best scorers in the entire NBA and he and CJ McCollum are the only backcourt in the NBA that can give Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook for the top spot there.

The issue will be how they guard the Nuggets. Jusuf Nurkic will most likely matchup with Nikola Jokic for most of the game, but Enes Kanter can’t really guard Jokic, which will most likely keep him from getting significant minutes.

The next defensive question for Portland is how they’ll guard Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon. The most logical plan would be Robert Covington, but Covington is an elite team defender and doesn’t excel as an on-ball individual defender. So it remains to be seen how they’ll stop the forward from Missouri.

Denver Nuggets

Anytime you can trot the MVP out on the floor you should have a leg up on the opposing team. The loss of Jamal Murray to injury early in the year prevented the Nuggets from becoming a truly elite team, but Nikola Jokic has stepped up and become one of the best players in the NBA. Michael Porter Jr. looks destined to be an elite forward and they’ll dominate the posts, but how will they defend Lillard and McCollum?

Denver is also not a great team against the spread, they only cover 47.2% of the time and play a lot of close games instead of pulling away from the competition.

Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets Prediction

I think this series goes 6-7 games, but I do think this first game goes to Denver. As hard as it will be for Denver to guard the backcourt of the Trail Blazers, I don’t think anyone on Portland can guard Jokic, Porter or Gordon. They’ll control the inside and the MVP-to-be will do what he always does, distribute the ball with elite efficiency. There is always a chance we get 60 points from Dame, but I’m not going to bet on that happening, even if it’s possible
