Brian Good gives us his Lakers vs. Suns pick for Sunday's Game 1
ANALYSIS

Lakers vs. Suns Prediction – Sunday, May 23

It seems weird to see so many people picking against a No. 2 seed in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. But, I guess that is what happens when one of the best players in NBA history is on the No. 7 seed. The Lakers are not your average high seed, and the Suns are coming off a massive playoff drought. It’s time for Lakers vs. Suns predictions.

Lakers vs. Suns

LeBron James reminded everyone that he’s The King with his dagger 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining to clinch the opening-round NBA Play-In Tournament win against the Warriors. As for the Suns, they made a real push for the top spot in the West but were held off by the Utah Jazz down the stretch.

Los Angeles Lakers

This is by far one of the hardest games/series to bet on. The Lakers have not shown us much of anything lately. They look disinterested at times and needed an insane second half run to get by the Warriors in the Play-In. But, this is still LeBron James we’re talking about. He will be ready to play and give it everything he’s got, despite the news of his breaking COVID protocols. As of now, he’s still expected to play, but obviously this pick changes if he doesn’t.

This is still the defending NBA champion Lakers we’re talking about here. LeBron may be slightly over the hill, but he’s a top 3 NBA player right now and continues to show that when he’s on the floor. What remains an unknown is what we’ll get from his supporting cast.

In the win over Golden State, it was Alex Caruso that stepped up with 14 points off the bench, but he was the only bench player to score more than six points. Kyle Kuzma needs to make more of a difference when he’s on the floor and Anthony Davis needs to play like one of the best players in the NBA if they’re going to make a run.

Phoenix Suns

It’s been a while since the Phoenix Suns have been in the NBA Playoffs, as a matter of fact, it’s been 11 years since they last won a playoff series. Still, the Chris Paul deal made a world of difference and they didn’t just make the playoffs, but they got the No. 2 seed in the process.

We all know the type of player than Chris Paul, Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton are, but Mikal Bridges has been the real x-factor on this Phoenix Suns team. He shoots an insane 54.3% from the field and 42.5% from beyond the arc. When they need a player outside of their stars to step up, he’s the guy to do it time and time again.

The Suns have significantly better depth than the Lakers and that is huge in the playoffs. Will it be a deciding factor in this one? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Lakers vs. Suns Prediction

The public has basically already decided that the Lakers are going to win this game and this series. I like the Lakers team, but I’m not ready to write the Suns off just yet. So, I’m taking Phoenix in Game 1 of this series. Not only do I think they’re playing better basketball, but any time I can fade the public this heavily, I take the chance. It’ll be a back-and-forth series, but I like Phoenix to win by a few possessions in Game 1.
