NBA Playoff Picks - Saturday, May 29
The game of the day?
Perhaps. On one hand, the Memphis Grizzlies shocked the world by winning Game 1 in Utah, and then drew to within two points late in the third quarter of Game 2 in a game that the Jazz absolutely had to have.
On the other hand, Utah was without Donovan Mitchell in Game 1, and with him, the Grizzlies seem to have no defensive answer for the Jazz, giving up 141 points on Thursday night.
Consider this: Memphis shot 54.1 percent from the field in Game 2 and still lost by double digits. That’s the sixth highest figure given up by Utah this season, and only the 13th time they’ve allowed a team to shoot over 50 percent on them. The Jazz lost 11 of those other 12 games before emerging victorious here.
In other words, this was probably the Grizzlies’ best shot at dethroning a healthy Utah squad, and not only were they unable to do it, but they really didn’t come close.
Is it possible Memphis has another shooting performance like this in them? Maybe, but they only shot above 50 percent 18 times this season, and none of those came against a top-six defense, which the Jazz most certainly are.
With a two-possession spread, this decision is easier than it looks.
