NBA Playoff Picks - Sunday, May 30
Time and time and time again, we have doubted these New York Knicks.
That’s what happens when preseason expectations are so low, with the perpetually losing franchise tabbed by Vegas to finish with fewer wins than anyone in basketball.
It was those low expectations that saw them rise to the top of the league standings against the spread, but it was their gritty play that catapulted them all the way up to the East’s fourth seed.
That grit entailed always winning the games it seemed like they absolutely had to have, whether it was an early season win in Boston to end a five-game losing streak, an overtime win against the Grizzlies to break a stretch of five losses in six games, or a sweep of the final home stand to secure home court advantage in the first round.
Now, their backs are against the wall yet again. Their leading scorers have combined to make just 26-of-92 shots and their offense as a whole seems stifled by an Atlanta defense playing with renewed vigor. They also don’t have an answer for Trae Young, who is averaging 28 points and 10 assists per game on good shooting number across the board in this series.
And yet, somehow, New York has been outscored by just five total points in the three games, and are a road win away from regaining home court advantage despite some stretches of absolutely horrendous play.
One more time, they’ll muster up the energy to get the job done. The Knicks haven’t dropped four out of five against the spread since January, which points to a cover here, if not an outright victory.
