Knicks vs. Celtics Prediction

Before the Knicks take on the Celtics in Boston in the first game in Knicks history New York fans can legally wager on, it pays to take a look back, not only at Thursday’s matchup between the same two teams, but at their seven previous contests over the last two seasons.

Last year, the first of the Thibodeau era and what turned out to be the last with Brad Stevens as head coach, the Knicks won two of three against their longtime rivals. The first two of those came in Boston, the first of which featured a 30-point blowout in what proved to be a key moment in New York’s season and the second of which was a narrow loss after Marcus Smart hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in the closing seconds. The Knicks covered both games.

Fast forward to this season, when the teams split the first two contests before New York came back from a 25-point deficit to win on Thursday. All three games have had a few things in common. First, the Knicks have been down big in every one, trailing by a dozen in the opener at home and then by 15 in the second game in Boston. Despite those deficits, they’ve won two and took a fourth-quarter lead in the third.

The other commonality is Evan Fournier, who has three 30-point games this season, all of which have come against his old team. Coincidence? I think not. Fournier has played with the same fire against Boston that he shows in the summer with Team France. He has quite simply turned into a different player when he sees green than during any other time this year.

Aside from Fournier though, the Knicks top dogs have struggled. Julius Randle is shooting under 40 percent from the field and barely above 25 percent from deep in the three matchups. RJ Barrett, meanwhile, has shot it hot from downtown – including the miraculous game-winner on Thursday -  but otherwise hasn’t had much success, including one of his worst outings of the season before the final few minutes the other night. As for the other former Celtic Kemba Walker, he’s currently listed as out.

This game figures to be close like nearly every other time these teams have faced off. All year long, neither team has dealt well with prosperity, whereas both have responded admirably when their backs have been against the wall. Right now, the Celtics are the more desperate team. That means they probably come out on top.

But this line is large enough to feel good about taking the dog even if you don’t think they can win. New York hasn’t been above the occasional no-show job this season, and this team did just go down by nearly 25 points less than 48 hours ago. That said, the Celtics haven’t earned any benefit of the doubt. Take the points on the road.
