Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns Line Movement

Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns Prediction

My bad y'all.

Yesterday I wrote about all the reasons the Suns were the safest bet in the NBA this season, flirting with a level of dominance we don't often see from non-superteams. The Clippers, I noted, fought hard, but simply didn't have the talent to hang with the best in the league.

And to some extent, I was right. LA fought hard all game, the Suns woke up, started to pull away in the third, relaxed a bit in the fourth, and then ultimately won by a margin of more than two possessions. The result was never in doubt, but it didn't matter as Phoenix dropped their first game against the spread in more than a week.

Credit to Ty Lue for having a team that battles even in the face of adversity. It's proof that in this season of all seasons, simply bringing your all on a nightly basis goes a long way.

For proof of that in the inverse, look no further than the Houston Rockets. The Rockets have, in no uncertain terms, given up. They have dropped nine of 10 overall and eight of nine against the spread. Their current five-game losing streak includes two 13-point losses to the Pelicans, a 19-point home loss to the Raptors, a 25-point road loss to the Spurs, and most recently, a 34-point annihilation in Utah. They have stopped competing, and against a team like Phoenix, that is a problem.

This is the largest spread Houston has faced as a dog all year and the third-largest for the Suns. The good news: Phoenix has covered the two games where they've been picked by more points. They will make it three for three now. Give the points at home.

Brooklyn Nets at New York Knicks Line Movement

Brooklyn Nets at New York Knicks Prediction

The bottom has fallen out in New York.

In one borough we have the Nets, who will be without any stars tonight. They ended their 11-game losing streak with a home win against Sacramento, but are still 8th in the East. The most likely scenario is that they end up in the play-in.

In another borough, we have the Knicks. Like the Nets, they can point to injuries to some extent, with Derrick Rose having missed two months and RJ Barrett missing the last three games after he was inexplicably left in at the end of a blowout loss and suffered a severely sprained ankle with 18 seconds remaining.

Even so, the Knicks have completely imploded, losing 12 of 15 games, including the last two to the tanking Blazers and Thunder. That the OKC game was at home, in a game the young Thunder were missing their top two guys, was particularly disconcerting.

It's impossible to have any confidence in either of these teams right now. Brooklyn is trotting out a roster without single starter from their ideal preseason first five, and yet, they are 2-0-1 ATS in their last three. The Knicks are once again without Barrett and are still so heavily dependent on hot shooting; they are 19-4 when they shoot above 37 percent from deep and 6-29 when they don't. Simply put, they have no business giving points in any game against any opponent. Take the points on the road.
