Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Clippers Player Prop Pick: Don't Sleep on Dennis Schroder

The Houston Rockets are on the road in Los Angeles tonight before heading into the All-Star break. As the tank mission continues for the Rockets, some unlikely sports betting heroes could emerge out of the depths of Houston's misery. Houston was one of many teams to fly under the radar at the trade deadline and shake up their rotation a bit, even though it wasn't noteworthy.

The Rockets acquired Dennis Schroder from the Celtics last week, and the German guard is already surprisingly impactful with his new team.

Kevin Porter Jr. and Eric Gordon are expected to miss tonight's action against the Clips due to an illness and groin soreness, respectively. This frees up a gigantic amount of playing time and usage for Schroder.

KPJ missed last night's close game against the Phoenix Suns, which allowed Schroder to showcase his abilities. The 9-year veteran was the focal point of Houston's offensive attack and was finding his teammates for buckets all night.

Here are Schroder's playmaking lines in two games since being traded to Houston:

  • Monday @ Utah: 18 Minutes, 9 Potential Assists, 5 Assists
  • Wednesday @ Phoenix: 39 Minutes, 22 Potential Assists, 9 Assists

Schroder was forced to play behind Porter Jr. in Houston's rotation on Monday, but without the young guard, he took over the team's playmaking duties last night. I'm expecting much of the same tonight.

We saw Schroder operate in a similar role as the Lakers' lead playmaker in LeBron James' absence last season. And, his numbers in these games were incredibly impressive. Schroder recorded at least 6 assists in a whopping 19 of 21 games without King James last season, averaging 8.0 APG. In April 2021, Schroder averaged 8.3 APG on 16.3 potential assists per game, good for 5th-most in the NBA.

Last night's high-volume effort in Phoenix is a perfect example of the playmaking responsibilities that will fall on Schroder's shoulders without Kevin Porter Jr. The Clippers present an uncomplicated, average matchup that shouldn't prevent Houston's lead guard from racking up some assists. LA has been pedestrian in the assists department, allowing the 14th most assists to opposing point guards this season.

The Clips have allowed 6+ Assists to their opponent's starting point guard in six of their last nine games, and I'm looking for Schroder to make it 7-out-of-10 tonight.
