It's not like they've been racking up W's against fellow bottom-feeders either. They've topped the Celtics, Hornets, and Raptors, all on the road while beating the Cavs at home and losing close in the rematch against Boston and on the road in Washington.
The biggest reason for their success isn't the play of one person, but of three: star rookie Cade Cunningham, second-year stud Saddiq Bey and last year's Most Improved Player runner-up Jerami Grant, who is back healthy and producing. Those three have combined to average an even 60 points per game over the last six on solid shooting. As a trio, Detroit is outscoring teams by an average of nine points per 100 possessions in the 148 minutes they've played together.
Now, returning home after a 3-game road trip, they face a Pacers team that has been spunky in their own right, going 4-4 ATS since the Haliburton trade while winning three of their last five outright. That said, Indy is just 2-7 as a road favorite this year, good for a 22.2 cover rate that is the second-worst in the league in such situations. Meanwhile, Detroit is a respectable 14-12 ATS as a home dog.

It would seem that they should be a double-digit dog going into the building of what has been far and away the best team in the league, but here they are getting the benefit of a spread that is smaller than it should be. They have also faltered down the stretch, and with no point guard on the horizon (Derrick Rose remains injured) and Julius Randle turning into his usual fourth-quarter pumpkin, even if this is a close game throughout, the Knicks cannot be counted on.
Phoenix just showed they can beat a bad team, whipping the Blazers by 30 at home. Considering Portland beat the Knicks a few weeks ago, that's a bad sign for New York. Give the points at home.
