NBA Parlay Breakdown

Our first game sees the San Antonio Spurs face off against the Charlotte Hornets, and this contest should be a fun one. After a slow start to the season, the Spurs have found some form in recent months, and while they're still below .500 they are a team that can give you problems. The Hornets, on the other hand, have been fun all year as they blend exceptional offensive talent with the excellent basketball mind of James Borrego, but their defense is a big issue they haven't been able to solve as of late. Interestingly, the Spurs and Hornets are next to each other in the defensive ratings with San Antonio 20th and Charlotte 19th - but offensively, there's a considerable gap. In terms of injuries, the Hornets continue to be without Gordon Hayward, but James Bouknight being out also hurts the team's bench unit, however outside of those two, the team is healthy and should be ready to fire on all cylinders - the Spurs will be sweating on Devin Vassell and Lonnie Walker who are both questionable to start the day. While I love Greg Popovich's coaching style and how the Spurs play, I don't think they have enough defensive pieces to slow down the Hornets, which is why I'm giving them a +8-point head start for this game.

Next up we have the Orlando Magic vs. the Memphis Grizzlies, and we've had to implement a monster spread to try and keep things fairly matched. Don't take the Grizzlies' loss against the Celtics as an indictment of the teams' skill level - Boston matched up well and is arguably the best defensive team in the NBA. The Magic have no such luck and are firmly rooted towards the foot of all major team ratings. Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr are a fearsome two-man combo while Desmond Bane is an exceptional shooter from deep, and don't forget about Steven Adam's manning the paint. The Grizzlies are simply further ahead in their team development than the Magic currently are and I expect it to show throughout the contest between these two teams tonight. In terms of injuries, neither team has anything new to note, but I'm sure the Magic will be praying that Jalen Suggs is cleared to play after being listed as questionable to start the day. Overall, the Grizzlies should have no problem getting back on track tonight, but just in case the Magic decide to upset the apple cart, we're going to give them a massive +16-point spread to ease their struggles.

Finally, we're backing the Minnesota Timberwolves to easily dispatch the Portland Trail Blazers, and who can blame us, right? I mean, the Blazers are essentially running their third-string roster at present while the Timberwolves are clawing for an opportunity in the post-season. Luckily for the Trail Blazers, no new players are showing on their injury report, but with 8 players already on there, you can't help but feel sorry for them. The Timberwolves are an explosive offensive team who seem to fade in and out of being defensively capable, yet something tells me that even a mediocre defensive performance will get them over the finish line tonight. When a team is as depleted as Portland, all of the stats and ratings go out of the window - frankly, if they manage to win tonight it's going to be down to a poor performance from the Timberwolves, not a game-changing night from Portland. With such large odds stacked against them, I've had to give the Trail Blazers a +13-point spread to even begin to feel comfortable with backing them.

If Jimmy Butler isn't made available for tonight's game against the Philadelphia 76ers things could get ugly for the Miami Heat pretty quickly. It also doesn't help that Kyle Lowry continues to be away from the team for personal reasons. I mean, this type of game is exactly why the Heat has built around scrappy veteran talents because unless you drag the likes of Joel Embiid and James Harden into the trenches, they're going to toy with you on every possession. Right now, there isn't a more potent duo in the NBA than what the Sixers have at their disposal, and when you account for Matisse Thybulle and Tyrese Maxey on defense, Philadelphia quickly becomes a worrisome opponent.

Sure, the Heat have a deep roster with some breathtaking talent, yet without two of their big three on hand to pitch in, the Sixers are likely to bully their way to a victory. I don't think this game is out of Miami's reach, not by a long shot, but with so many question marks around players' availability tonight, we would be foolish to back them to win the contest. A +8-point spread gives us a little bit of wiggle room as we wait for the lineups and rotations to shake out, and knowing the Heat, they won't allow themselves to get blown out anyway. Or so we hope!

Do the Los Angeles Lakers need a +12.5 spread to even the playing field tonight? On paper no, but in reality, yes they certainly do. By now we're all aware of the dysfunction surrounding this year's Lakers team, and how they keep getting in their own way during games. Of course, the Warriors aren't the same team we saw at the start of the season either, but Klay Thompson coming back from illness is going to give them some additional scoring, floor spacing, and take some of the pressure off Stephen Curry. I'm not going to say the Warriors are on the way back to their dominant selves until Draymond Green returns to the rotation, but Thompson has helped bridge some of the gap, that's for sure.

The Lakers enter tonight with no new injuries, but Anthony Davis' absence is going to hurt against one of the better offensive units in the NBA, while Russell Westbrook is likely to be a non-factor judging on how his season has gone. I personally don't think the game is going to need such a big spread, but the Lakers are an unpredictable unit this year - for all the wrong reasons - so we need to account for their propensity to do the unthinkable, meaning allowing themselves to get blown out by a conference rival.
