ANALYSIS

NBA Player Prop Picks for Monday: Theo Maledon Goes Ham

I was on Twitter today when I was reminded of something very important. My guy Jonathon Arnold made me aware that there will be some poor unfortunate souls out there that will be forced to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers tonight. Then I checked the schedule and realized that was the only game in the 10:00 pm ET slot. That's terrible. What are we supposed to do after the 8:00 pm ET games are over. Just go to bed? No chance. I knew there had to be something in that game we could bet and be proud of. It's science. That's when I came up with the best possible way to play this thing. It involves a rando and 20+ points at +220. It's perfect in every way.

Obviously we're at FanDuel since we're doing the 20+ thing. You can always get 15.5 at other shops but keep in mind it's like -120 everywhere. I hate laying -120 or more on anything so I am just going with 20+. If feels right. And yes I am aware that he could easily fall on 16, 17, 18 or 19. That's part of the thrill.

The thing with the Thunder is they don't care anymore about winning. What's really good is neither do the Portland Trail Blazers. This game shapes up to be one that features almost zero defense which is what we want to see. Over the last three games, Portland has the sixth-worst defensive efficiency mark in the NBA. We need a Thunder player to back in this spot. It's just that simple.

Oklahoma City is literally missing everybody. Lu Dort, SGA, Josh Giddey, everybody. I don't even think Darius Bazely is playing tonight. Short rotations are good targets and the Thunder have a pretty short one. Someone has to play and I think one guy who will is Theo Maledon. He's played at least 32 minutes in each of the last two games. That's good enough for me.

The books really can't price these players right since they never play and their roles are drastically different with everyone out. For example, Theo has gone 20+ in both of his last two games. He's taken at least 13 shots in both and he's drilling his free throws. Portland doesn't foul much but we'll take anything from Theo. We may get some threes since the Trail Blazers are among the league's worst three-point defenses.

Anyway you look at this, we shouldn't be getting +220 for a guy in Maledon's position tonight. If it starts to go south, we can always just turn it off and go to bed. I don't think that will happen though. This should be fast-paced game. A bad team over game. If that happens, Maledon could easily drop 20+ for the third straight game.
