Brooklyn Nets vs Atlanta Hawks Prediction

With all due respect to last night's Lakers Pelicans romp in LA, where serious play-in and playoff ramifications are concerned, this is the biggest game of the season so far.

The Lakers, for all their glossy names, are no one's idea of a threat to win the title. Brooklyn is a different story. As Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have taken turns reminding us of over the last several weeks, they are arguably the top one-two punch in the NBA. Either is a threat to go off for 50 on any given night, and they score as efficiently as anyone.

Brooklyn is low on quality two-way supporting pieces, which is why they'll be picked to lose in a series against their foe from last week, the Milwaukee Bucks, but against just about anyone else, don't be surprised to see the Nets as the favored team in a playoff series.

They just need to get their first, which is why Saturday night's game is so vital. Right now, there is a three-way tie for 8th through 10th place in the East between today's opponents, the Nets and Hawks, and the Charlotte Hornets, who head to Philly to play the struggling Sixers.

Tonight is arguably the most difficult game left on Brooklyn's schedule, with their remaining games coming against the Rockets, Nets, Cavs and Pacers. The Hawks, on the other hand, head to Toronto from here, then face Washington before going to Miami and then finishing at Houston. Brooklyn is already up 2-0 in the season series, so they own the tiebreaker. That means a win tonight essentially puts them up two games on the Hawks, and Atlanta can kiss their chances at passing the Nets goodbye.

Brooklyn has quietly won eight of 12 and continues to score at will. They still can't stop anyone, but if tonight turns into an offense-only affair (which it will) they have the horses to get it done. This game matters as much as any the Nets have played this season. They showed they can punch with the best of 'em against the Bucks a few nights ago, and Atlanta is not of Milwaukee's caliber. Give the points on the road.
