The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets met just one week ago, but a lot has transpired for each team in just seven days. At the time of their last meeting, the Lakers were in contention for a spot in the play-in tournament, while the Nuggets were still fighting for a playoff berth and one of the Western Conference’s top six seeds. 

Since that meeting, Los Angeles has been eliminated from playoff contention, and the Nuggets have clinched a playoff spot. For perspective, Los Angeles had 16:1 odds to miss the playoffs before the season started, the same odds one can get on the Baltimore Orioles to make the MLB playoffs. The Nuggets will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed as they enter the day with an identical 48-33 record as the Utah Jazz.

Leg 1: UNDER 229

We should be watching a star-studded regular-season finale that includes many of the game’s best players. Instead, Lebron James has already been ruled out with an ankle injury, and Los Angeles will also be without Russell Westbrook (shoulder), Anthony Davis (knee), Carmelo Anthony (illness), and Kendrick Nunn (knee). 

The Lakers scored 120 points against the Thunder on Friday night, but Oklahoma City is one of the few teams in the West worse than Los Angeles this year, so this was not too eye-popping of an accomplishment. And if the Nuggets choose to rest Nikola Jokic in the regular-season finale with their playoff spot clinched, both teams’ offensive ceilings are low.

Leg 2: Stanley Johnson Over 9.5 Points

The absence of all the Lakers’ stars was Stanley Johnson’s gain last time out, as the forward scored a season-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting against the Thunder. In tonight’s finale, Johnson may not face as many as four Nuggets starters, specifically Aaron Gordon and Nikola Jokic. Though those two big men are not particularly known for their defense, it still means Johnson could be facing a thin frontline of Denver’s, and thus scoring opportunities should be easier to come by.

Leg 3: Nuggets ML

Although there may not be much difference this season between the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the playoffs, Denver should still be motivated by a possible Northwest Division title. The Nuggets would win their third division title in four years with a victory and a Jazz loss. And since the Jazz and Nuggets both play at 9:30, Denver’s division fate will not be decided before tip-off. Thus, there is no conceivable way the short-handed Lakers will beat the Nuggets under these circumstances. Los Angeles has lost 16 consecutive road games against Western Conference opponents and will finish their disappointing season with yet another road loss.
